RIYADH – Establishing international relations certainly has several advantages, ranging from satisfying each other’s needs to preventing armed conflicts.

However, not all countries have harmonious relations. One of these, Saudi Arabia, known for having less harmonious relations with different countries.

Here are some enemy countries of Saudi Arabia, but now relations are slowly recovering.

1. Iran

Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in 2016. This came after protesters stormed the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran.

The demonstrators are known to have protested against the application of the death penalty against the Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said the government will not allow Iran to interfere with Saudi Arabia’s internal security.

Adel al-Jubeir also ordered Iranian diplomats to leave Saudi Arabia. In addition to this, during the Iran-Iraq war in 1980-1988, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries supported Saddam Hussein.

Diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran were frozen for three years after the war. However, now the two opposing countries are putting an end to the tensions that have worsened since 2016 through a series of talks and positive steps.

2. Syria
