Endesa, through its renewable development subsidiary Enel Green Power España (EGPE), has acquired a photovoltaic portfolio of 519 megawatts (MW) from the Spanish developer Arena Power. The portfolio consists of 11 projects under development in Huelva and construction is expected to begin in 2022 and operations in 2024. The projects purchased by Endesa represent an investment of around 350 million euros, including the acquisition price and cost of its construction and start-up. They will generate 1,250 jobs during construction and 26 during the subsequent operation and maintenance phase.
The 11 projects are located in six towns in the province of Huelva: La Palma del Condado, Villarrasa, Gibraleón, Trigueros, San Juan del Puerto and Beas. All of them will evacuate the energy generated, which is equivalent to the electricity supply of some 305,000 homes, through a single transmission line that will be connected to the Palos substation, located in the Industrial Pole of Huelva, one of the largest energy consumption business agglomerations. great of Spain. From this substation, the energy needs of the chemical, oil and metallurgical complex of Huelva, which houses 18 companies and 19 large facilities, are met. In this way, Endesa will help decarbonize part of the energy consumption of this cluster, since the eleven solar parks will avoid the emission into the atmosphere of some 515,134.66 tons of carbon dioxide.
These facilities are in addition to the recent start of works, by EGPE, on its first solar park in Huelva capital (San Antonio) with 30 MW of power, 18 million investment and 100 jobs during its construction period. Along with this, this renewable power will be operational to eventually feed the green hydrogen production project presented by Endesa to the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge.
EGPE has a renewable installed capacity of 7,800 MW and a project portfolio of 41,800 MW in Spain at the end of 2020. The installed capacity is distributed in 4,745 MW of hydraulic energy; 2,422 MW of wind energy; 609 MW of solar energy; and 3 MW from other renewable sources. Endesa’s 2021-2023 strategic plan contemplates the development through EGPE of 3,900 MW of new renewable power in Spain (3,000 photovoltaic and 900 wind power) with an associated investment of 3,300 million euros.
In Andalusia, Endesa put into service in December 2020 four photovoltaic plants in the provinces of Seville and Malaga with 186 MW of power. With this, Endesa’s total renewable power, operational at the end of last year, stood in that community at 1,611.29 MW (1020.41 MW of hydroelectric generation, 333.92 MW of wind generation, 256.5 MW of energy photovoltaic and 0.46 MW of biomass). In addition, EGPE is building 80 megawatts of photovoltaic power in the Sol de Casaquemada projects, in the Sevillian town of Sanlúcar la Mayor, and San Antonio, in Huelva. And, along with all this, it is closing the processing of another 6 photovoltaic parks that will soon begin construction in Malaga and Seville to provide another 251.5 megawatts of clean energy.
In total, Endesa’s renewable subsidiary has recently started up and has a total of 517.5 megawatts under construction or in advanced administrative processing in the community. The operation represents the first transaction for Arena Power, which is currently developing projects totaling 1 gigawatt (GW, equivalent to 1,000 MW) in Spain. Arena Power was created in 2019 and is focused on renewable generation and hydrogen production.
