At the end of June, the foundation stone for the Tolpanvaara wind farm of the renewable energy company Enefit Green in northern Finland was laid. It is planned that the park equipped with 13 wind generator turbines will start producing green energy at the end of next year.
Currently, Enefit Green has four wind farms under construction. Two of them are located in Lithuania, one in Finland and one in Estonia. The wind farm in Finland is one of the company’s most ambitious projects and the first to start construction.
According to the chairman of the board of Enefit Green, Aavo Kärmas, the company’s short-term goal is to quadruple the production of renewable energy in Finland, the Baltic States and Poland. “New wind farms are needed to implement large-scale and affordable renewable energy production.
Over the next five years, Enefit Green will allocate 1.5 billion euros for investments in wind and solar energy parks. On the other hand, the electricity produced by the new wind farms will be available on the market already next year,” explains Kērmas.
Hando Sutter, CEO of Eesti Energia and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Enefit Green, adds that there is currently a great need for renewable electricity throughout Europe. “Each new wind farm complements the market with affordable electricity, helps to ensure energy security and reduce dependence on natural gas. In these challenging times, the development of renewable energy is critical to protecting the environment, consumers and the national interest,” Suter said.
The Tolpanvaara wind farm is located near the town of Pudasjärvi in northern Finland. It is planned to install 13 wind turbines with a total capacity of 72 megawatts in the wind park, which would produce 250 gigawatt hours of electricity per year. For comparison, this amount of electricity is about a third of the total amount of wind energy produced in Estonia in 2021. Enefit Green will invest almost 83 million euros in the creation of this wind farm.
At the moment, active construction works are underway in the wind park area: roads have been completed, the construction of foundations and crane platforms, as well as cable installation works have started. The next step will be laying the foundations of the wind turbines and connecting them. The installation of wind turbines is planned for the spring of next year, and the production of electricity in the wind farm is expected to start by the end of 2023.
In 2020, Enefit Green acquired the Tolpanvaara wind farm development project from the Finnish state forest manager Metsähallitus. The investment decision on the creation of the wind park was made at the end of 2021, but the construction was started in February this year.
