Eneco Relieves Overloaded Power Grid with Wind Farm in Groningen

Eneco will avoid rush hours on the power grid at a Groningen wind farm. The energy supplier allows the wind turbines to rotate at peak times in such a way that they catch little wind. Eneco does this because the local power grid is overloaded.

In the future, the energy supplier also wants to avoid the ‘rush hour’ in other places and is starting at a wind farm in Farmsum in Groningen. Grid operator Enexis will pay Eneco to relieve the power grid in this way.

According to Enexis, this is the first time that the organization has signed a contract for this. Other network operators would have already done this.

Peak moments are a major problem on the Dutch power grid. In recent years, consumers and businesses have started using more and more electricity, partly because they have replaced gas with electricity. Moreover, consumers and companies are also generating more and more electricity via solar panels, for example.

On days when the sun is shining and the wind is blowing hard, the power grid becomes overloaded during certain parts of the day. This is because much more power is supplied than is consumed.

If Eneco allows the wind turbines to produce less electricity, this relieves the power grid. The company receives a cost-covering fee for this. Eneco does not mention exact amounts.

The company does report that it also wants to generate less power in other places to relieve the grid. This not only concerns wind turbines, but also solar parks. It is not yet clear in which regions this should happen. The contracts for this have yet to be concluded.
