So far, the strictest rules in Germany have been applied in Bremen: clubs, pubs, discos and bars had to close between 2am and 6am on weekdays.

Senate changes restaurant regulations

On Tuesday (15.11.2022) the Senate approved the corresponding amendment to the Bremen restaurant ordinance. “The curfew has been passed. In all other federal states, bar none, there have long been positive experiences with the lifting of the curfew, everywhere,” said spokesperson for cultural policy of the Greens, Kai Wargalla.

Residents should be protected

“Bremen needs an attractive nightlife culture, especially if the city is to remain an attraction for young people,” says the Green Party. However, the protection of residents should still be guaranteed. “A curfew puts a lot of people out on the street at once which creates noise and potential for conflict, but without a curfew this is usually leveled. If the concentrated noise decreases, it’s good for the residents too. Because their desire for a good night’s sleep is understandable and legitimate,” Wargalla said. In the event of repeated complaints, authorities can continue to impose conditions on individual companies.

Block times still apply here

By waiving the curfew, the city wants to create more reliability for operators than the previous patchwork with numerous exemptions. However, there are two exceptions to the lifting of the curfew: The curfew remains in place for gaming and betting rooms. (Go)
