End of the wheat bread days for Biden – VG

ELECTION WINNER: Republican Glenn Youngkin becomes new governor of Virginia. He beat Democrat Terry McAuliffe, who was the state governor from 2014 to 2018.

The gubernatorial election in the state of Virginia is ominous for Joe Biden: – It goes towards a difficult by-election for the Democrats, says US expert Are Tågvold Flaten.

In a year’s time, a third of the members of the Senate will stand for election – and the entire House of Representatives. Then the Democrats’ narrow majority in Congress can break.

“The gubernatorial elections in Virginia and New Jersey can be a pointer to the path it takes,” said Flaten, editor of the website American Politics.

Republican Glenn Youngkin (54) won in Virginia, while Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli gave the Democratic governor of New Jersey a fight to the finish line.

Youngkin is described as a new star among Republicans.

– The election result in Virginia is good news for the Republicans. It shows that it is possible to get Donald Trump’s support and at the same time appeal to more moderate voters, says Flaten.

– Managed the balancing act

Youngkin accepted the statement of support from the former president, but did not want to act with him or have Trump campaign for him.

– The Democrats’ strategy was to say that Youngkin means much of the same as Trump, but Youngkin managed the balance and marked that he is also his own man, says Flaten.

Biden took Virginia by more than ten percentage points in the presidential election. Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe was expected to win early, but polls were slower ahead of election day.

In the end, Youngkin won comfortably with 50.7 percent, against 48.6 percent for McAuliffe.

Youngkin has avoided criticizing Trump. Nevertheless, he has managed to distance himself from the former president, who is unpopular with center-right voters in the state.

Trump celebrated as victory

Trump cashed in on the outcome of the gubernatorial election on Tuesday as a victory for his movement.

“The MAGA movement is bigger and stronger than ever,” Trump said on Tuesday.

MAGA – or “Make America Great Again” – was Trump’s campaign slogan in 2016.

DEAD RACE: Republican Jack Ciattarelli greets his supporters. He is currently on a par with Democrat Phil Murphy in the New Jersey gubernatorial election.

In the state of New Jersey, there was a deadlock in the morning between the relatively unknown Ciattarelli and the incumbent Democratic governor Phil Murphy.

As 84 percent of the votes were counted at 09.00 Norwegian time, both candidates had 49.6 percent of the votes, according to CNN.

Both Murphy and Republican Ciattarelli had received nearly 1.2 million votes each, but only a minimum of 61 votes separated them. So far in favor of Ciatterelli.

“The postal votes and votes in urban areas of the state that remain to be counted are normally more democratic and indicate that Murphy will take the victory home in the end,” says Flaten.

– Possible warning next year

But he adds that it is not a good sign for the Democrats, that they barely manage to keep the governor’s seat in New Jersey.

– It is another example that the Republicans have had a good night and a possible warning about what the election next year may bring, says Flaten.

PRESIDENT: Tonight’s gubernatorial election in two states is not a good sign for Joe Biden, who is returning to the White House after attending the Glasgow climate summit.

He believes the Democrats are heading for a difficult midterm election year.

The party has a majority in the Senate, with the Vice-Presidents ‘double vote, and 221 members in the House of Representatives against the Republicans’ 211.

– At the end of the summer, there was an abrupt end to the wheat bread days for Biden, says Flaten.

The president is struggling to get enough support for his infrastructure and social policy.

– Starting to have a bad time

– The Democrats do not get any Republicans and must agree among themselves. They have not managed that, due to internal strife, says the US expert.

Voters are also frustrated by the burden of action during the corona pandemic and shortage of goods, as a result of delivery problems in world trade.

– If Biden is to get through his policy, he is starting to have a bad time.

– Does a Republican victory in Virginia point to Trump being able to return in 2024?

– We have to go through the by-elections in November next year, before the speculation really starts about the next presidential election and what Trump chooses to do, says Are Tågvold Flaten.
