Good morning! Tonight Pope Francis will celebrate Midnight Mass in St. Peter’s to celebrate the birth of Jesus. The Serious Request will also end–fundraiser.

What can you expect today?
- The Serious Request fundraising campaign on 3FM ends after one week. Last week, the radio station focused on the campaign, which raised funds for the Het Vergeten Kind foundation.
- Pope Francis will preside over midnight mass in St. Peter’s in Rome on Christmas Eve.
- NPO Radio 2 starts at midnight with the Top 2000. The first song that plays is Driver’s license by Olivia Rodrigo. The Queen leads the list for the nineteenth time continue with the number Bohemian Rhapsody. Traditionally, number 1 can be heard on New Year’s Day just before the end of the year.
What did you miss?
Tens of thousands of residents in and around Haarlem have tonight been without electricity for hours. According to network operator Liander, there was a “major power outage”. Between 11pm and 4am, between 30,000 and 40,000 people on 41 streets had no electricity.
The failure was probably caused by a fire in a high voltage substation. People are complaining on social media about Christmas dinner food in their fridge and freezer that has been lost.

Warnings have been issued in more than half of the United States for extremely low temperatures, among other things. According to the Weather Service, it’s not often that so many alerts are active at once.
We asked Barend Wurth of Illinois and Suzanne Kennedy of Iowa to share how they’re coping with the extreme cold. It freezes 22 degrees, but the wind makes it even worse.
