Banknotes with a nominal value of BGN 20, issued in 2005, will cease to be legal tender as of February 1, 2023, the BNB reminds. We remind you that at the end of last year the Governing Board of the Central Bank decided to withdraw them from circulation, the Central Bank announced.
As of the beginning of next month, the twenty levi from this issue will cease to be legal tender. They cannot be used for shopping in the store, nor can they be returned as change. The only option is to exchange them at the cash desks of the Bulgarian National Bank. In Plovdiv, this can happen at the Cash Center of “Skobeleva Maika”. Money will be exchanged at face value, with no quantity limit, no fee, and no exchange deadline.
Their main characteristic is the pale purple color. On the front side of the banknotes is depicted the symbol of the BNB – part of the building and the emblem of the Central Bank. On the reverse side is a replica of the first Bulgarian banknote with a denomination of 20 BGN from 1885.
As of the end of October 2022, the total number of all BGN 20 banknotes in circulation is over 123 million. This includes the purple banknotes in question, issued in 2005, and those with the face of Stefan Stambolov.
