End of prestige battle in China: limit on height of skyscrapers

According to the Chinese, in some cities with a smaller population, it is not necessary to go up in the air at all. The new rule now applies: for a city with fewer than 3 million inhabitants, a building may not be higher than 150 meters high.

Limit

For cities with more inhabitants, the limit is now 250 meters. Since last year, the country has already had a limit for skyscrapers, one of 500 meters. Some buildings built for that purpose are much larger, such as the Shanghai Tower in the city of the same name. It is no less than 632 meters high, making it the largest in the country.

According to the policymakers, the high towers are often not functional, but are designed and built in a battle for prestige between architects or project developers.

“We are in a phase where people want to build something that will go down in history,” Zhang Shangwu, a spatial designer at Tongji University, told the South China Morning Post. “Every building should be a landmark, and that’s what developers try to achieve by going to the extreme in design.”

This is not the first time China has imposed restrictions on builders. Earlier this year, a ban on ‘ugly architecture’ was introduced.
