Meta Quest launched in 2019, then under the name Oculus Quest, and has since received various software updates. When the sequel Quest 2 was launched, updates with new features continued to be implemented in the predecessor, but the manufacturer of the VR headset has now decided to put the updates on hold.
In addition to leaving Quest without new features in the future, some features will also be deactivated. Primarily, these are social tools such as the ability to create or join groups and removing access to Meta Horizon. The latter should take place on March 5th.
Why Meta has decided to shelve feature updates is currently unknown. Hardware differences between the Quest and Quest 2 are speculated to have held back the development of new features, leading Meta to look ahead.
However, this only applies to updates with new Quest features, and users will of course still have access to their VR experiences. Critical bug fixes and security updates are expected to roll out to headphones through 2024. However, Meta doesn’t share a specific end date.
