Netflix puts an end to the suspenseful series after just one season.
The news is a bitter pill for TV creators and fans alike to swallow.
«Sad but true. It is with a heavy heart that we have to inform you that “1899” is not continuing», write the German creators of the series Baran bo Odar (44) and Jantje Freise (45) in a statement on Instagram.
The series premiered in November and was well received by viewers and reviewers alike.
The plan was for the adventure to continue with two new seasons. Now it’s the end of the production, where Danish actor Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen (22) – otherwise known by “Borgen” and “The Rain” – is on the cast list.
Denmark’s Clara Rosager (26) – known for, among others, ‘Morbius’, ‘Den som dreper’ and ‘The Rain’ – is also among those who are now losing their TV job.
«Sometimes not everything goes as planned. Such Is Life We know this is a disappointment to millions of fans out there», say the creators of the TV, also known for the series “Dark”.
And yes, fans despair to such an extent.
«I am heartbroken. I’m so in love with the series and the work you’ve done», writes a follower the post of the producer duo.
Actress Emily Beecham (38) is among those commenting with a crying face under the post.
The actor Aneurin Barnard (35) writes: «For all involved, this was not how it deserved to end».
Especially up Chirping in the last two days it has been inundated with the reactions of viewers, who thunder against Netflix and threaten to cancel their subscriptions.
One has even been started campaigns to change Netflix’s mind. At the time of writing, over 35,000 signed.
Many are calling for other channels to now pick up the series.
Netflix has not commented on the closure, but the US media, including Wiredhe believes the decision is due to the series not getting enough new subscribers.
While it was a hit in many countries, it probably didn’t live up to expectations.
“1899” is about the steamer Kerberos bound for New York in 1899. Among the passengers, some European emigrants, a British woman fleeing a mental hospital, a Danish family who escaped a tragedy and a Chinese woman on the run from now.
The captain also has a trauma that he tries to distance himself from.
During the voyage, the ship receives a distress signal from another ship, which has been missing for four years. Eventually the series develops into a sort of ghost story. But now it’s up in the air what happens next.
