End of chaos with smartphone chargers. The EU wants to introduce a single standard

Brussels over unification charging standard for smartphones he has been wondering for a long time. So far, however, no regulations have been passed that would force producers to come to an agreement on this matter. Of course, it must be admitted that the situation is much better today than, for example, a decade ago. An important change was, for example, the introduction of chargers with removable cables to the market.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done. Research conducted by the European Commission in 2018 shows that half of the smartphones introduced to the EU market had a port USB micro-B, 29 percent used the port USB-C, a 21 proc. from the port Lightning.

In the last 2-3 years, it has been growing in popularity USB-Cbut budget mobile devices still use the outdated one microUSB. It comes to this Applewhich persistently focuses on the original standard Lightning. When in 2018 the European Commission tried to reach an agreement on this matter with the Cupertino company, it argued that the unification of the charging standard will “stifle innovation”.

Apple also talked about tons of electro-wastethat will arise as a result of forcing customers to replace their chargers. Of course, the iPhone manufacturer did not mention that the main reason for his stubbornness is the fear of losing control of the Apple accessories market.

The EC wants to control chaos. There will be one charging standard

According to information from the Reuters agency it followsthat Brussels does not lay down its arms and once and for all wants to settle the issue of smartphone chargers. The European Commission intends to present legal solutions in this matter in September. Details are still unknown, but it can be expected that – in line with the market trend – USB-C will be the standard proposed by the European Commission.

Over the introduction a uniform charging standard for devices mobile the European Parliament debated last year. At that time, MEPs almost unanimously voted in favor of introducing such a solution, pointing to the benefits for the environment and consumers.

Will Apple bow down this time and go to the hand of EU officials? This is doubtful, to say the least. On the other hand, such a decision would certainly please the users of Cupertino devices, who have been demanding USB-C in iPhones for years. It is worth adding that Apple is not a complete opponent of this standard. USB-C can be found, for example, in MacBooks as well as in the iPad Pro.
