There has been an official heat wave in Greece since Thursday. Temperatures rose to 45 degrees today. The conditions are the same as in 1987, when it was also scorching hot for days. At the time, thousands of people died from the heat and smog.
Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis promised to do everything possible to deal with the situation. He also again called on the population not to turn the air conditioning too low. The energy system in the country is under pressure from the persistent heat and the air conditioners that are running at full speed. The Ministry of Energy previously advised the Greeks not to go below 26 degrees.
It is unclear when the heat will subside. Some meteorologists fear that the high temperatures could persist for the next two weeks. For the rest of this week it will remain well above 30 and sometimes 35 degrees in many places in Greece.
