End of an Era: PLAY Magazine Announces Final Issue After 29 Years of Celebrating PlayStation

Although the publication lost its status as an official PlayStation magazine (Official PlayStation Magazine = OPSM) in the meantime, the magazine continued to be published as an intellectual continuation, but it has now come to an end.

Printed video game magazines are also scarce in the UK. Of these, Play left this time. In a short message on Twitter, we can read that it is with a heavy heart that they announce that the magazine is leaving: the next issue will be the last one to be published, and those will be notified still have active membership. employees dealing with subscriptions, so they don’t walk away with the money.

OPSM started in the UK in 1996 and lasted for 25 years. The change came in May 2021, when the publisher, Future Publishing, replaced Play. This was just a name change, as the editors remained unchanged, and all that happened was that the official Sony brand was removed from the newspaper. The calculation was restarted with the name change, but it was more or less a spiritual continuation of OPSM, which is therefore approx. it ran for three and a half, a total of 29 years, before the game ended.

“We all like to play games – but the unfortunate truth is that every game has to come to an end at some point, whether it’s because you get crushed by a rock , you have dropped the controller in frustration, or you just have been. run out of credits. This time has now come for Play too. I’ve always seen this version of the magazine as a combination of the legacy of Official PlayStation Magazine, PSM and Play,” wrote editor Oscar Taylor-Kent on GamesRadar, Future’s website. He thanked the team members about (Jessica Kinghorm, Miriam McDonald, Milford Coppock) for their work, because in his opinion they made his job much easier during the years he spent at OPSM and Play.

In August, one of the oldest gaming magazines in the United States, Game Informer, closed its doors after 33 years (and even the Internet archive was deleted …). Today, it is difficult for a paper with such a topic to stay afloat. In Hungary, these papers have come and gone since the 2010s: 576 KByte, Konzol Magazin, Controller, Pixel, GameStar, PC Guru…
