After 40 years, one of Europe’s largest free festivals is coming to an end. The organization of Parkpop in The Hague has announced that there will be no new edition. The festival has attracted an average of 200,000 visitors in recent years.
The corona pandemic, rising costs and higher energy prices mean that a free festival on the scale of Parkpop can no longer be achieved, according to the organization. “Parkpop has also been loss-making for a long time and several attempts to break through that development have failed,” can be read in a press release.
No edition in 2023
The festival had already been canceled for this summer. The organization investigated whether the festival could continue as a paid variant from 2024. The organizers conclude that this is not realistic. “Parkpop will not be able to distinguish itself programmatically enough to secure its national position.”
Parkpop has been organized since 1981. Most editions were in the Zuiderpark, but last year the festival moved to the Malieveld, writes Broadcasting West. That year, UB40, Froukje, Mart Hoogkamer and Maan, among others, performed.
“The celebration of 40 years of Parkpop in 2022 was a good conclusion to a beautiful tradition,” the organization writes on its site. “Perhaps a good time to look for new traditions in The Hague.”
