Koelnmesse is suspending the world’s largest photo fair Photokina until further notice. In fact, it means that after seventy years, the biennial trade fair for professional photography comes to an end.
The fair should have taken place last year, but was postponed until 2020. Due to the corona pandemic, that edition was also canceled. The 2022 edition continues in any case not through.
Well-known manufacturers such as Leica, Nikon or Olympus had already canceled their participation for 2020 last year.
According to the organization, there is no longer a feasible basis for an international trade fair for photo, video and imaging. While cameras have also gone digital for the most part, the market has faced stiff competition from smartphones. However, the fair did not want to broaden to smartphone photography and video.
There is a good chance that the exhibitors will from now on use the IFA fair in Berlin to show their products. Some already did.
Earlier the IT fair CeBIT in Hanover also stopped.
