Encouraging 2020 results for northern Ontario wildfires

At the end of the season, which ended on October 31, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry identified 607 forest fires that affected a total of 15,460 hectares of forest.

This is an increase of 70 fires from the 537 in 2019.

The two most significant fires were those that forced the evacuation of Red Lake and the Eabametoong First Nation.

In contrast, the number of hectares affected by these fires in 2020 is only a fraction of the 269,635 hectares affected during the same period in 2019.

The 2020 season remains well below the average of the last 10 years, which stands at 870 fires for 162,799 hectares affected.

The 2018 season had been particularly devastating, with 1325 fires.
