Jakarta –
The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) Malaysia encourages its citizens to marry early or at a young age. This is done to boost the birth rate in the country
KPWKM Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said she will plan the program from next year, considering the low birth rate last year according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM).
“Next year we will hold several programs (to encourage people to marry early). Apart from that, we will hold several discussions at all levels to encourage our society (especially) young married couples to start having children early,” explained Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri which is quoted from World of BuzzMonday (4/12/2023).
“This (program) is also to strengthen family institutions (and reduce the divorce rate). So, we will also hold a family month every November to encourage friendship,” he continued.
Quoted from the Malaysian media page Cosmos, the birth rate in Malaysia last year averaged 1.6 children in women aged 15-49 years. The birth rate is the lowest record in 50 years.
This figure is also lower than in 2021, which recorded an average of 1.7 children per woman in the same age category.
Seeing this condition, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri asked for cooperation between the public and private sectors to foster a family spirit in today’s society.
