On Christmas, I want to tell you a story about Bulgaria.
As Deputy Attorney General I was on a visit to the US. We had lunch in downtown Washington with colleagues from DANS and the National Intelligence Agency. We talked about the usual – that you should go abroad to see how beautiful our Motherland is. And then a surprise happened. A piece of cake was brought to our table with a jam written on the plate. It said “I love Bulgaria”.
We all seemed to get an electric shock. The waiter explained in English that it was from his colleague. Then a beautiful young girl approached the table and spoke to us in pure Bulgarian. She introduced herself as Ayshe from Yakoruda. She said that she saw the tricolors on our jacket and added that she had not seen Bulgarians in the city for years. It was another thing to get on the plane to Bulgaria from London and see “our faces”. We talked briefly and parted ways.

My colleagues and I discussed the meeting for a long time. And we all said it was one of the most powerful moments of our lives. When I returned to Bulgaria, I sent Ayshe a present. The lion – symbol of Bulgaria. I wrote to her that I wish her children would love their country as much as she does. She returned me a photo from the monument of Vasil Levski in the Bulgarian embassy.
Years have passed and I don’t know where Aishe is or what she is doing. However, I am convinced that she still loves Bulgaria very much. And that there is hope for our Motherland as long as there are people like her.
Therefore, on the brightest days of the Nativity of Christ, I wish all Bulgarians a lot of health and grace.
And may all of us and our heirs love Bulgaria like Ayshe from Yakoruda.
God save Bulgaria!
