Empty land is the cause of the high number of dengue cases in South Jakarta

jumantik (a larva monitor) can’t do monitoring there

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Empty land is one of the causes of the high cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in South Jakarta, especially in Pondok Labu Village, Cilandak District, South Jakarta.

“The cause (of the DHF case) in Pondok Labu is because there is a lot of vacant land, so jumantik (a larva monitor) can’t do monitoring there because it requires permission from the owner,” said Cilandak Camat Djaharuddin when contacted in Jakarta, Thursday.

Therefore, Djaharuddin admitted, he had difficulty cleaning the mosquito larvae because it required permission from the land owner who did not live in the area.

However, after obtaining permission from the owner, the Cilandak jumantik has routinely carried out mass community service from last Sunday (3/7) for the next month.

The position of vacant land in the village, said Djaharuddin, there are several locations which are scattered and the land area is around 1000-2000 meters per location.

He said that currently the cases of dengue fever in Pondok Labu have decreased because as many as 50 residents have recovered from the disease and can return to their activities.

Apart from that, his party also held a larvae-free village competition at the sub-district level to deal with dengue cases, especially in Pondok Labu Village from July 3 to the next month.

“We are holding a larva-free village competition in each kelurahan represented by one RW with the highest number of cases,” he said.

Later there will be a jumantik (a larva monitoring officer) who is a representative from each RW to monitor changes in residents’ behavior to reduce the number of dengue cases.

The assessment includes the examination of the head of the RW by conducting a question and answer session with the local jumantik.

The sub-district also helps provide education to residents.

Furthermore, this competition also provides prizes from corporate social responsibility in the form of coaching money or trophies to sub-districts for those who have succeeded in suppressing dengue cases as a form of appreciation.

“This competition has been held in the previous year. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it can only be held again this year,” he said.

Previously, the South Jakarta Health Sub-dept. said that there were 52 cases of dengue fever in Pondok Labu, making the sub-district the highest dengue case in South Jakarta during January-June 2022.

Head of the South Jakarta Sub-department (Kasudin) Yudi Dimyati explained that one of the causes of the high dengue fever in Pondok Labu was the population density.

“Pondok Labu is a densely populated area, directly adjacent to the area and rainfall is quite high there,” said Head of the South Jakarta Sub-department (Kasudin) Yudi Dimyati.
