Empowering Women in Mexico City Prison Through Makeup Workshop: A Step Towards Rehabilitation and Reintegration

Mexico City, May 8, 2024 – Social reintegration policies and programs are an essential part of any crime prevention strategy. However, to be implemented effectively, these must consider the specific problems and needs faced by women who lose their freedom.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Mexico, the authorities of the Mexico City prison system and the Business Coordination Council (CCE) worked together to make the workshop “The importance of makeup in the professional image and make-up as a source. of income” to the Women’s Social Reintegration Center “Tepepan”.

16 deprived women participated in the workshop given by the make-up artist Ms. Ana García, where they had access to professional experiences on the functions, use and consistency of make-up, styles, skin care, the among other special methods.

During the practical sessions, the participants received a personal make-up kit with different tools such as shadows, lipsticks of different shapes and different brushes, thanks to a donation led by the artist.

“I have been supporting my colleagues at the center for many years in applying makeup for special events or when they have visitors. These types of workshops work for us to learn new things and update what we know,” said one of the participants.

Building work skills empowers women who have lost their freedom and has a positive effect on their self-esteem. Likewise, these types of skills can open up employment and entrepreneurship opportunities in the future.

“Back to the Community” supports training and employment programs in public utility work for people deprived of liberty in Mexico City, which reduces the chances of criminal recidivism. This campaign also works to eliminate prejudice against people in confinement and to strengthen support networks.

These actions are in line with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Health and Well-being, 10: Reducing Inequality and 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.
