It is a measure that could convince other cities and countries to do the same. In New York, employers will be obliged to show the salary corresponding to each job advertisement.
Postponed five months
The objective is to put an end to wage inequalities, whether they concern the gender or the skin color of the employees. Voted four months ago, the measure has not yet entered into force. New York lawmakers voted on Thursday to push back its application for five months, reports l’agence Associated Press.
The law applies to any employer with at least four employees. This concerns a third of employers but 90% of employees, according to the New York State Department of Labor. The ad, whether online or not, should include a salary range that the employer thinks they can give.
Women are paid less than men
Federal statistics show that American women earn less than men in almost every field.
In 2019, a law passed in Colorado made it mandatory to put a salary range on every job advertisement. Other American states, such as California or Connecticut, have implemented similar systems with certain particularities: the salary may not be displayed but may be requested after a job interview and certain small businesses are not concerned.
