Statistics Canada reports a loss of 68,000 jobs last month, which comes after the drop of 207,000 recorded in April. Almost all of the jobs lost are part-time. The unemployment rate remained stable at 8.2%. A year ago, in May 2020, it had peaked at 13.7%.
For the first time since the start of the pandemic, in April 2020, employment in the goods sector fell in May. Total jobs in manufacturing fell by 36,000 and by 16,000 in construction.
Job losses were concentrated in Ontario and Nova Scotia in May. In Quebec and the greater Montreal area, despite the start of the easing of restrictions, employment remained stable for a second consecutive month.
In May, 5.1 million Canadians worked from home, Statistics Canada also reports.
