They will leave with a check but without their tires: the 600 employees of the Michelin factory in La Roche-sur-Yon (Vendée), which must close by the end of 2020 or even before management believes, will have to refund or return the tires they buy at a low price from their company, according to the CGT. This measure was announced in December but was not revealed until Saturday, February 1. The site syndicate denounces “a meanness” from group management.
These people don’t live in the same world as us
Every year, all Michelin group employees can buy a set of four tires of the brand to equip their personal vehicle. They pay around 25% of the public price for mounting this equipment on their car. During the negotiations opened as part of the job protection plan (PSE), the CGT of the Vendée site asked that each licensed person leave with a set of free new tires. Management refused this request in December and, according to the CGT, clarified that the dismissed employees should return their tires or buy them back to the company, at a variable price depending on wear.
“Getting us to work in the Michelin group and charging us for tires when we are laid off is very small”, gets annoyed Anthony Guilloteau, CGT union delegate on the Vendée site. “There is disgust with the company and this direction for which a euro is a euro. However, this euro is not given in addition to the employees: it is to make money to give it to the shareholders!”, denounces the chosen one. For the unionist, this decision of the management demonstrates “that there is no humanity at Michelin”. He assures : “These people do not live in the same world as us. They are not close to 100 euros at the end of the month, like some employees.”
