More than 10,000 members took part in the FNV survey. Of the people who can only perform their work in the workplace, 65% are afraid of contracting corona there, according to FNV. And 45% think that their employer is not taking sufficient corona measures. According to the FNV, employers regularly think that employees should simply come to work when there are mild complaints. In addition, too often insufficient distance is kept.
CNV conducted a tour of 1200 workers with a physical occupation who cannot work from home. 71 percent of the respondents say they feel unsafe with regard to a possible corona infection. 63% of workers have recently seen a lack of attention for corona measures in the workplace.
70% of the respondents say they have an increased risk of contracting a corona infection at work. A quarter of those surveyed would prefer to work from home because of the risk of a corona infection.
‘Worrying outcomes’
“These are worrying results,” said Piet Fortuin, chairman of CNV. “It is impossible that we have been in this crisis for ten months, but millions of Dutch people still feel unsafe at work. The bus drivers, production employees, healthcare personnel, supermarket employees, parcel deliverers, security guards. Day in, day out, they are ready to help the Netherlands through the crisis. They cannot work from home safely, but because of their work they run an increased risk of infection. “
CNV would like to see the Social Affairs and Employment Inspectorate (SZW) conduct unannounced inspections more often for safety in the workplace. “If security is not in order, there will be a fine,” Fortuin argues. Moreover, CNV calls on employees who feel unsafe in the workplace as much as possible to report to the Inspectorate SZW.
New variant
FNV vice-president Jong indicates that the fear of contamination is greater than during a study in November, when 62% feared it. “Probably because of the new variant. It turns out that the government cannot just leave a safe and healthy workplace to employers. Sending the labor inspectorate here and there is really not enough. I expect the government to steer this more strongly, but I only hear about working from home. ”
Minister Wouter Koolmees (Social Affairs) speaks of an ‘important theme’ and assures that it is on the agenda when he meets with employers and trade unions next week. According to him, the inspectorate will already give ‘more follow-up’ to signals from employees about unsafe working conditions. If a workplace is often contaminated, it can be closed temporarily.
