An allegedly angry customer stabbed a security guard in the neck at an Upper East Side (NYC) Chase bank headquarters this morning, leaving him critically injured.
The attacker, apparently Hispanic according to witnesses, became upset after being told that the services he needed should be done over the phone and not in person, police sources told The Associated Press. New York Post.
The private security company worker was in uniform and was stabbed by the attacker just after 9 a.m. inside the Chase Bank lobby on East 86th Street near 2nd Av. He was taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, the police said.
The suspect showed up at the bank before it opened and first argued with the security guard because he demanded to be let in, but was told that he would have to wait because the place was not operational yet. Then when he saw the workers enter the bank, he was furious, thinking they were customers, the sources said.
The attacker returned later when he opened the bank, met with an employee and was furious again when he was told that the services he needed could not be performed in person and had to be handled over the phone, according to sources.
At that point, the suspect began to get upset and the bank manager asked him to leave, but before leaving the premises he stabbed the security guard in the lobby. “People were screaming,” said fruit vendor Md Iqbal, 50, a witness to the attack.
The attacker was described as Hispanic with long curly hair, and was last seen wearing a white shirt. No arrests have been made.
