Employed population of Metropolitan Lima increased 4.6% between January-February-March 2024

According to the results of the Permanent National Employment Survey (EPEN), in the moving quarter January-February-March 2024 compared to the similar moving quarter of 2023, the employed population of Metropolitan Lima increased 4.6% (235 thousand 300 people), and compared to the same moving quarter of 2019 (pre-pandemic), it increased by 11.0%.

In the mobile quarter of study, the employed population totaled 5 million 359 thousand 700 people, of this total, 54.0% (2 million 892 thousand 800) are men and 46.0% (2 million 466 thousand 900) women . The female employed population grew by 3.9% (91,600) and the male population by 5.2% (143,700).

The employed population aged 45 and over increased by 10.7%

By age groups, the employed population aged 45 and over increased by 10.7% (192 thousand) and those aged 25 to 44 by 2.6% (66 thousand 400); while the employed population under 25 years of age decreased by 2.9% (-23,200).

Employed population of all educational levels increased

In the quarter of analysis, the employed population increased by 11.6% (42 thousand) among those with primary education or a lower level, those with university education by 8.9% (129 thousand 600), those who achieved a higher level did not university in 5.6% (58 thousand 300) and among those who have secondary education slightly in 0.2% (5 thousand 500).

Trade and service activities boosted job creation

In the rolling quarter observed when compared to the same rolling quarter in 2023, the employed population in the Commerce sector increased by 6.5% (72 thousand), followed by Services by 6.4% (182 thousand 900); while they decreased in Manufacturing 1.8% (-12 thousand 200) and Construction by 7.7% (-32 thousand 500).

The population employed in companies with 1 to 10 workers increased by 6.0%

The employed population in companies with 1 to 10 workers increased by 6.0% (190,500) and in economic units with 51 or more workers by 5.1% (70,700); while, it decreased in establishments with 11 to 50 workers by 4.6% (-26 thousand).

Unemployment rate stood at 7.7%

In the moving quarter January-February-March of this year, unemployment in Metropolitan Lima affected 7.7% of the EAP; higher result by 0.2 percentage point compared to the similar moving quarter of 2023 (7.5%). It is estimated that 447,500 people sought employment in Metropolitan Lima, in the moving quarter of analysis.

Unemployment affected 8.7% of women; while among the male population it affected 6.8%. Likewise, a higher proportion was observed among the population under 25 years of age at 15.5% and those with secondary education at 8.2%.

The population with adequate employment in Metropolitan Lima increased by 4.9%

During the January-February-March 2024 moving quarter, the population with adequate employment increased by 4.9% and compared to the same moving quarter of 2019, by 3.1%. On the other hand, in the observed moving quarter, the underemployed population increased by 4.2% and compared to the same quarter of 2019 by 24.6%.

It should be noted that, in Metropolitan Lima, the population with adequate employment totaled 3 million 151 thousand 100 people.

Average monthly income from work increased by 7.5%

The INEI reported that the average monthly income from work in Metropolitan Lima was 1,979.2 soles, an amount higher by 7.5% compared to the similar moving quarter of 2023 and compared to the same period in 2019, it increased by 15 ,3%.

Average monthly income increased in all age groups

During the moving quarter of analysis compared to the same moving quarter of 2023, the average monthly income increased in the population aged 25 to 44 by 10.7% (203.9 soles), in the group aged 14 to 24 by 4 .3% (51.4 soles) and the group aged 45 and over at 2.6% (52.4 soles).

Income among the employed population in the Manufacturing sector increased by 12.5%

The average monthly income of workers in the Manufacturing sector increased by 12.5%, followed by Construction (11.1%) and Services (8.8%); while, it decreased in Commerce (4.8%).
