Mexico City. Mexico’s labor market saw a decline in August, as 626,770 jobs were lost compared to the previous month, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.
According to the National Occupation and Employment Survey (ENOE), in the eighth month of 2024 the number of men and women and employed men in the economically active population (EAP) amounted to 59 million 700 thousand people, a figure that was higher in 518 thousand jobs compared to the same period in 2023.
The monthly decline observed was explained by a greater loss of jobs among the male population, which was more than 345 thousand jobs, reaching 35 million 478 thousand. However, they increased more than 195 thousand.
In the case of women, the number of employed people rose to more than 24 million 221 thousand, data that showed an elimination of 281 thousand jobs, although it increased by 323 thousand compared to the data for 2023.
The total EAP in August was 61 million 570 thousand people, data that showed a decline of more than 575 thousand compared to July. Compared to last year, it increased by 586 thousand.
The unemployed population of the EAP in total was 1,870,000, which translated into increases of 67,000 compared to August of last year and 50,000 monthly.
In formal employment, 158 thousand positions were eliminated, while in informal employment, 468 thousand jobs were eliminated.
The unemployment rate in the eighth month was 3.04 percent, which was higher than the 2.93 percent observed in July.
The underemployment rate was 8.0 percent in the reference month, a figure that observed a monthly decline, since in the previous period it was 8.1 percent.
