Emperor of Turkish folk music returns to the Netherlands after 20 years

In the 1970s, Tatlises broke through with the song Footwear (The shoe on your foot). The titles of his songs indicate which genre Tatlises practices: that of the tearjerker, in which the misfortunes of life are sung about. Well-known songs are for example I’m down (I’m broke) and BAm I not the most human? (Am I not human?).

Tatlises is not only an emperor musically. He also built a business empire in the tourism, hospitality and construction sectors. He also had a popular TV show, the Ibo Showand starred in movies.

As often happens with emperors, people tried to overthrow him from his throne. Tatlises was shot in the leg in 1990 and survived assassination attempts in 1998 and 2011. In 2011, he was even shot in the head. He was left with a paralyzed arm.

He himself is also not of impeccable conduct. He had abusive relationships with women, and business disputes were also more than once resolved through violence.
