Empa Builds Drone Aviary to Research Drone-Infrastructure Interactions

A drone aviary is to be built on the Nest research and innovation building in Dübendorf. The Federal Materials Testing and Research Institute Empa wants to use the test facility for various applications and research the interaction of drones, infrastructure and nature.

The aim is, for example, to develop drones that can detect and repair cracks in house walls or wind turbines, according to Empa. The so-called “Dronehub” is a kind of cage, with a height of up to eleven meters and a floor space of 90 square meters. It consists of a tube construction and a grid.

It is said that this will make the Zurich region a hotspot for drone research. In addition to the new aviary on the Empa campus, a new test arena for drones and autonomous vehicles is currently being built at the airport in Dübendorf. A certification body for commercially used drones is to be established there under the leadership of the University of Zurich, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (ZHAW) and the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK).

The army is also researching the flying robots. A recent report shows 45 projects with artificial intelligence in the federal administration. Most are in the military department and 3 of them deal with drones.
