Emotional Victory for Svitolina at Wimbledon and Statement on Ukraine-Russia Conflict

— After the birth of our daughter, I think this is the second happiest moment in my life, says Svitolina, who returned to tennis after maternity leave last spring.

After the match, Azarenka wanted to shake hands with her opponent – something Svitolina already said before the tournament will not happen if she meets a Russian or Belarusian player during Wimbledon. This is because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Then the audience chose to boo the former world number one Azarenka.

— I just tried to think about my home country, and the people watching and cheering me on there. I know how much this will mean to them. Every moment of happiness that they can share means a lot. These are tough times in Ukraine, says the 28-year-old Ukrainian and continues:

— But I’m playing here in front of you. So I can’t complain. I’m just trying to win every point.

Svitolina defeated Azarenka 2–1 in sets (2–6, 6–4, 7–6). In the quarterfinals, she meets world number one Iga Swiatek.
