TV Emotions flared during the fifth blind auditions of ‘The Voice of Flanders’. Nineteen-year-old Liene Cuyx from Kortessem enchanted all coaches with her special voice but also with her optimism, despite the cancer she overcame. Her life story brought back unpleasant memories for Mathieu. “I don’t really like that, but I found it emotional…”
Even before she went on stage for her blind audition, Liene Cuyx could not contain her emotions. “I really want to push my boundaries. As a child I wanted to participate in ‘The Voice’. The fact that the time has now come is very confrontational,” says an emotional Liene. But there was no reason to be stressed at all, because her rendition of ‘You’ve Got the Love’ by Florence + The Machine was greatly appreciated by the four coaches.
Today Lien gets a lot of pleasure out of life with her chiro and volleyball friends, who describe her as the most positive person. But two years ago she received less good news. During the corona period, she was struck by lymphatic cancer and could barely see her friends. “Even then I always tried to be as positive as possible. That positivity has made me who I am. After everything I’ve been through, I thought I had to participate in ‘The Voice of Flanders’. You only live once. Before you know it it’s over. So I decided to just do it.”

An example for everyone
Fortunately, Lien has now recovered and she wants to get the most out of life. “It’s fantastic that you have recovered,” Koen responded. “The fact that you have remained positive is an example to everyone. Your audition was so sincere and sincere. Not everyone who can sing well can also perform well. You do.”
“I can not stop laughing. I noticed that you could really get into the song. Your positivity and energy are very contagious,” Natalia added. Jan is very strict in his choices, but with Liene he didn’t hesitate for a second. “My heart is racing so much. I only print for the people I really want to invest energy and time in.” Mathieu Terryn also did everything he could to welcome Liene to his team. “Without context we were already in your world. You have a unique voice and you delight us. It got me, everything. I would be incredibly honored to have someone like you on my team,” he said.
If my younger sister hadn’t gotten to the hospital in time, she wouldn’t be here now

Meningitis
After consulting with her friends to announce her final choice, she confidently chose Mathieu. After the audition he got a lump in his throat and poured his heart out to Koen, Natalia and Jan. “I didn’t feel that quickly, but I did find it emotional… My younger sister had meningitis last Christmas. That is of course something completely different and I don’t want to compare it, but if she had not gotten to the hospital on time, she would no longer be there… That is the only reason why it is great that she is on my team.” Natalia didn’t keep it dry either.

Young old acquaintances
During the fifth blind auditions, two old acquaintances also appeared. 18-year-old Mette-Marie Maes took second place with team K3 in ‘The Voice Kids’ in 2020. Now, as one of the youngest candidates in ‘The Voice of Flanders’, she is well on her way to emulating that success. Koen and Mathieu as well as Natalia were deeply impressed by her rendition of ‘I Say a Little Prayer’ by Aretha Franklin. “I felt spoiled, it was a lot of fun to watch. It is really an advantage that you have already participated in ‘The Voice Kids’,” said Natalia. Koen was also amazed by her talent. “You don’t just sing very well, you also create many nuances and you are technically strong, which creates many possibilities.” But it was Mathieu’s beautiful words that convinced her to choose him. “Something happened. You hit all the notes, even the difficult parts. You were made to be on stage, in a very special way. You are truly an asset.”
Student Selina Baron (23) also did well to register for ‘The Voice of Flanders’ a second time. As a seventeen-year-old she joined team Laura and now she has a lot more self-confidence. Using confetti from a Bazart performance as a good luck charm, she fervently hoped that Mathieu would turn around, if only to please her boyfriend, a big fan. Mathieu was the first to press the button, but Natalia deliberately blocked him. “I saw it coming from a mile away. I felt so bad,” Mathieu responded. Although Mathieu doesn’t really have to complain, because he brought in no fewer than three candidates to his team in the fifth blind auditions.
