Origin, occurrence, extraction and use: The Breisgau offers an impressive geological diversity. From the crystalline rocks of the Black Forest to the sand and limestones of the foothills, the volcanic rocks of the Kaiserstuhl to the Quaternary loose rocks of the Upper Rhine Rift. Today a wide variety of mineral raw materials are extracted from these numerous rocks to supply the local economy. In earlier centuries, however, the extraction and use of natural stone had a significantly higher priority, as numerous abandoned quarries show. The construction of the Freiburg Minster, St. Stephen’s Minster in Breisach and many other structures would not have been possible without the building blocks from the region. In the online lecture on Wednesday, October 20 at 7 p.m., speaker Dr. Jens Wittenbrink from the State Office for Geology, Raw Materials and Mining in the Regional Council of Freiburg, using selected examples, insights into the geological formation of natural stones, their occurrence in the near and far vicinity of Emmendingen as well as their extraction and use.
