In the second round of the Keuken Kampioen Divisie we took our first win of the season. Visiting FC Volendam we won 0-1 against the relegated Eredivisie thanks to a goal by Jalen Hawkins.
After just one minute, Franck Evina had a great chance. The striker stayed ahead of his man on a deep ball from Pascal Mulder, but eventually came up against goalkeeper Barry Lauwers. A few minutes later, Hawkins also went one-on-one with the keeper, but he played the ball a bit too far in front of him. Kelian Nsona suffered the same fate a little later, and so the Emmen team came face to face with the goalkeeper three times in the first fifteen minutes.
After Mike te Wierik was dropped (he was replaced by Jorginho Soares), Emmen continued to hunt for the opening goal. Halfway through the first half, it seemed to come when the strongly playing Hawkins shot the ball into the net, but because Evina intercepted the cross, it was offside. On the other side, Bilal Ould-Chikh and Robert Mühren were dangerous with shots, but they also did not go in. So, at the half-time whistle from referee Laurens Gerrets, it was miraculously still 0-0 in the Kras Stadium.
Second half
After the break, Evina and Dennis Vos did not return to the field due to injuries, they were replaced by Agon Sadiku and Djenahro Nunumete. The Drenthe sickbay was quite full during the visit to Volendam.
Almost twenty minutes after the break, Emmen seemed to get their just reward when Hawkins, who had broken through, was brought down inside the sixteen by Volendam defender Yannick Leliendal. It resulted in a red card for the defender and a penalty for Emmen, but Torben Rhein had to acknowledge Lauwers as his superior in the penalty.
With a man advantage, Robin Peter’s team went in search of the coveted 0-1. And it came, fifteen minutes before the end. It was Rhein who came up against the goalkeeper after a deep ball, but Hawkins found the net with the rebound and thus opened the score. With an extra man, Emmen had few problems in the remainder of the match and so the first victory of the season was a fact.
