Emma Thompson on relatable ‘Love Actually’ cheating scene: ‘My heart was broken’ | Show

It’s an iconic scene in “Love Actually.” Emma Thompson’s character Karen cries when she discovers that her husband has cheated on her and secretly bought a gift, a piece of jewelry, for her lover. The actress was able to identify all too well in the scene, because she herself was cheated on by her ex-husband Kenneth Branagh (62). The married couple separated in 1995 after eight years, when Branagh entered into an affair with actress Helena Bonham Carter (56).

Thompson confesses to ‘Stellar’ magazine that watching that cheating scene still moves her and she still vividly remembers what it felt like to watch the scene. “Do you remember the feelings you had then,” she begins. “The scene where my character cries by the bed is so famous because it’s something everyone felt. My heart was broken by Ken (Kenneth), so I knew what it felt like to find the necklace that it wasn’t meant to myself.
