THE DRAMA. Emma Ribom easily advanced from the quarter-finals.

Afterwards came the news that the Swede had been washed.

– I’m really shocked, she says and breaks down.

In November in Gällivare, Emma Ribom received a yellow card when she went wrong in the classic 10 kilometer race in the Swedish premiere.

It has stuck with her throughout the winter and today it cost her dearly.

The Swedish sprint specialist easily advanced from his quarter-final in the Norwegian Drammen.

But moments later it emerged that she had received a caution during the heat due to obstruction when she entered Jessie Diggins’ track right at the start.

– I’m washed up and can’t compete any further. I’m really shocked actually. I had no feeling at all that it would end like this. That yellow card I got in Gällivare has just felt so unnecessary all season. It feels really sour now, she says resignedly afterwards.

Broke down

When did you find out?

– When I got on the bus to the other girls, they said I was washed. I wasn’t allowed to talk to the jury or see any pictures. It sucks. The competition is completely run. I really don’t think it is… often you have a feeling if you’ve done something, but today I don’t think anything is on the line. I don’t understand this disk at all. I think it’s really crazy. The only thing I can think is that it will be tight at the start, but I am ahead and then have the right to choose the track.

Ribom then breaks down.

– I’m most frustrated because I haven’t competed in a long time and was so excited to compete today, says the sprinter when she gathers herself.

Women’s coach Stefan Thomson believes that the washing up is correct.

– It’s really boring. Looked like it was a good day for her, nothing we can do about it. It looks like it’s correct, but it feels really sour, he says.
