The unlikely champion, who was educated in Bromley, south-east London, started playing tennis at the age of five and attributes her success to her parents.

“I think my parents both instilled in me from a young age to definitely have a positive attitude on the court.

And speaking last year, she said of her parents Ian and Renee, “They were really hard on me when I was a kid.

“They were arrogant to a degree, not just in tennis but in everything. I think I developed this mentality from a young age.

“On the side of my mother’s family, when I go to China, they are so mentally resilient. It’s like nothing can bring them down.

“I would say I get a lot of my inspiration from her. My mother worked very hard.

The young British star, who obtained an A in maths and an A * in economics in her baccalaureate this year, is also fluent in Mandarin thanks to her mother.

Speaking at Wimbledon earlier this year, Raducanu revealed that she also has close ties to her father’s homeland and travels to Romania every year.

She said: “My grandmother, Mamiya, still lives in the center of Bucharest. I go back there a few times a year, I stay with her, I see her.

Her choice of outfit, which she wore to each round of the US Open, was praised by her fans on social media.

Labor MP Rosena Allin-Khan added: “Emma Raducanu’s parents are Romanian and Chinese, she was born in Canada herself but still proudly identifies as British – she just won the US Open.

“Remember this, being British can be a real mix. That is why we must be an open and welcoming country. ”

Judy Murray tweeted a photo of Raducanu in her youth with Romanian tennis player Simona Halep.

She tweeted: “We should never underestimate the importance of female role models in sport and create opportunities for young athletes to connect with them. Emma Raducanu’s father is Romanian and here she is with Simona Halep. ”
