Emma, Noah and Sam are the most popular baby names in 2022. This is reported by the Social Insurance Bank (SVB), which provides an overview of the most popular baby names in the Netherlands every year. Last year, 677 girls were named Emma and 871 boys were named Noah.
Emma was number three last year. In 2020 and 2021, the name Noah also topped the list. For the first time, the SVB now also lists the most popular gender-neutral baby name: Sam. In 2022, 581 children were given this name.
After Emma, the name Julia is the most popular among girls (given 655 times). 624 girls were given the name Mila, good for third place.
Among the boys, Liam ranks second (666 times). Third place for Luca (664 times). In the list of gender-neutral names, Isa (377 times) ranks second, followed by Bo (305 times).
Max didn’t get more popular after Verstappen’s success
According to onomologist Gerrit Bloothooft of Utrecht University, Noah and Emma have been popular in many European countries for years. “It’s surprising that after Max Verstappen’s successes, his name hasn’t become more popular,” he says.
“For boys, the Arabic name Zayn and the Old Testament Boaz seem to come. Just like – also internationally – Luna and the Irish Maeve for girls.”
In 2022, more than 168,000 babies will be born in the Netherlands up to and including November. Of these, more than 86,000 were boys and more than 82,000 were girls.
