Defending champion Coco Gauff was eliminated in the round of 16 of the US Open after a surprise loss to Emma Navarro on Sunday.
Navarro won 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in an intense clash between Americans that left Gauff, the third seed, out of the competition.
GauffThe 20-year-old was unable to maintain the form that took her to her first Grand Slam title at Flushing Meadows last year. Despite winning 10 straight matches at the tournament and overcoming similar challenges in the past, the Atlanta native failed to complete a crucial comeback.

Despite closing out the second set with a strong performance, Gauff looked shaky in the third set, committing 19 double faults throughout the match, 11 of which came in the final set. She also racked up a total of 60 unforced errors, with 29 of them coming on her forehand.
Navarro, 23, meanwhile, was more consistent, committing just 35 unforced errors, despite having eliminated Gauff in the same round at Wimbledon. The Virginian will face Paula Badosa in the quarterfinals on Tuesday after the Spaniard beat Wang Yafan 6-1, 6-2.
Gauff’s loss follows the third-round exit of defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic, meaning the drought of defending champions in New York will continue. The last woman to win consecutive U.S. Open titles was Serena Williams from 2012-14, and the last man to do so was Roger Federer with five straight titles from 2004-08.
