In an exclusive interview with the TV show «Today» on NBC, Emma Heming Willis (45) tells how she experiences being the star’s carer.

– Dementia is tough, she says in the interview.

– It is demanding for the person who has received the diagnosis, but it is also demanding for the family. And it’s no different for Bruce, or me, or our girls. When they say this is a family disease, it really is.

Heming Willis further says that she does not know whether the husband himself knows that he is ill.

– It is difficult to know whether he is aware of his condition.

Went out together

The former action star’s aphasia diagnosis was announced by his family in March 2022.

Aphasia is a failure in the ability to use and understand words, even if both muscles and nerve supplies that participate in the speech function are intact, according to Store norske lexikon.

Both ex-wife Demi Moore and the three adult daughters Willis has with her, as well as his current wife Emma Heming Willis, came out as a joint unit in public.

Bruce Willis also has two minor daughters with the latter wife.

Accepting her husband’s diagnosis has been both “a blessing and a curse”, according to Emma Heming Willis.

– To finally understand what happened so I could accept it… It doesn’t make it any less painful, but… just knowing what happens to Bruce makes it a little easier, says the 45-year-old to “Today”.

Earlier this year, ex-wife Demi Moore shared a hilarious video of the extended family celebrating Bruce’s birthday. There he appears affected by the disease, but sings along to “Happy Birthday” and blows out the candles on the cake himself.

– It is important to take care of yourself

She refers to herself as a care partner rather than a caregiver.

– It is important for care partners to take care of themselves so that they can become the best care partners for the person they care for, she believes.

She emphasizes that Bruce Willis has a gift in that he continues to contribute by teaching the couple’s daughters Mabel (11) and Evelyn (9) important qualities such as “love, patience and resilience”.

– It teaches them so much about how to care and love, and it really is a beautiful thing in the middle of all the sadness.
