The wife of infamous Mexican drug lord El Chapo has been released from a US prison. Emma Coronel Aispuro served a prison sentence for drug smuggling and money laundering and has been released early. She will be under supervision for the next four years.
Coronel (34) was arrested at Washington airport in 2021. A few months later, after pleading guilty, she was sentenced to three years in prison for her role in the violent Sinaloa drug cartel.
She also helped her husband plan the spectacular escape from the maximum security prison in Mexico City in 2015. Joaquín Guzmán, better known as El Chapo, managed to escape through a tunnel that started in his cell and ended under a house in construction, a mile away. Coronel smuggled a GPS watch into prison by hiding it in food. This is how El Chapo’s accomplices managed to locate him. More than six months after his escape, the drug lord was arrested again in Mexico.
El Chapo (66) is serving a life sentence in the US, to which he was extradited from Mexico in 2017. Two years later, he was convicted of leading the Sinaloa cartel, which smuggled tons of cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana into the US and kidnapped, tortured and murdered members of a rival gang.
