The “Amal” mission The photo published on Sunday was taken 25,000 kilometers above the surface of Mars, wrote the Emirati Prime Minister Mohammed bin Raschid al-Maktum on Twitter. Sheikh Mohammed bin Sajid al-Nahjan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and de facto ruler of the Emirates, spoke of a “decisive moment in our history”.
The “Amal” (hope) mission entered Mars’ orbit on Tuesday at a speed of 18,000 kilometers per hour. A day later, a Chinese probe also swung into orbit to explore the surface of Mars. Previously, the USA, the Soviet Union, Europe and India had reached the planet in their own missions. On Thursday the rover “Perseverance” of the US space agency Nasa will land on Mars.
The Emirati space probe was on the road for seven months after its launch and is intended to help better record the planet’s climate. It is supposed to stay in Mars orbit for around two years and examine the surface of the planet at all times of the day and year. The probe is expected to orbit Mars every 55 hours and take a full image every nine days. The first scientific data are to be published as early as September.
