Dubai is implementing a new ban on heavy vehicles on a key thoroughfare, impacting commuters and businesses alike.Starting January 1, 2025, large trucks will be prohibited from traveling on the Dubai section of Emirates Road between aweer Street and Sharjah during peak hours – 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) says the move is part of a broader initiative to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety across the emirate. “this will increase traffic flow, reduce congestion and increase road capacity for private vehicles,” explained an RTA official. The initiative builds upon a similar ban already in place on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road during rush hour.
This isn’t the first time Dubai has implemented such restrictions. In April 2024, the RTA successfully introduced a heavy vehicle ban on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road during peak hours. Other major arteries, including Al ittihad and Maidan Streets, already have restrictions in place for truck traffic.
The impact extends beyond Emirates Road. Several other roads, especially those in residential areas near Sharjah such as Al Mishar, Al Muhaisna, and Oud Al mutina, face a 16-hour daily ban (6:00 am to 10:00 pm). Additional restrictions, running from 6:30 am to 8:30 am, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, and 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm, are in effect on busy streets like Airport, oman, and Damascus streets.
Major General Saif Al Mazrouei, Acting Assistant Commandant for Operations affairs at Dubai Police, emphasized the collaborative effort between the police and the RTA to educate truck drivers and transport companies about the new regulations. “The police have collaborated with the RTA to create awareness among truck drivers and transport company owners about the new timings,” he stated. He stressed the importance of compliance to avoid fines. To date, police have recorded 792 violations related to these bans.
The new restrictions on Emirates Road are expected to significantly impact logistics and transportation companies operating in the area. Businesses will need to adjust their delivery schedules to comply with the new regulations, potentially leading to increased costs and logistical challenges. The RTA has encouraged businesses to plan accordingly and utilize option routes during restricted hours.

World Today News Senior Editor:
Starting January 1st, 2025, heavy trucks will be banned from Emirates Road during peak hours. what are your thoughts on this new restriction?
Sarah Al-Amin: This is a bold move by the RTA, and I commend their efforts to tackle Dubai’s ever-growing traffic congestion. Emirates Road is a vital artery, and the influx of heavy vehicles during peak hours definitely contributes to delays and frustration for everyone. However, it’s crucial to consider the ripple effects of such a ban.
Sarah Al-Amin: Firstly, this will undoubtedly impact logistics companies and businesses that rely on efficient transportation. Finding alternative routes during peak hours may lead to longer delivery times, increased fuel costs, and potentially even disruptions to supply chains.
