Emirates News Agency – Using “Borouge” materials to build one of the world’s largest water transmission systems in Saudi Arabia

ABU DHABI, 25 October / WAM / Borouge plc, one of the leading petrochemical companies in the supply of innovative and diversified polyolefin solutions, has contributed to the completion of one of the largest infrastructure projects in the world by equipping it with innovative materials that have been used in the construction of a pipeline for the transmission of water between the cities of Jubail and Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The project, which was set up by Al-Rashed Group, used “PE HE3450 Borcoat ™ ️” polyethylene manufactured by Borouge for use in manufacturing protective films for steel pipes in their industrial projects.

The length of the double water transmission pipeline between Jubail and Riyadh is 824 km and consists of two pipelines with a diameter of 88 inches and a length of 412 km for each line, and has the capacity to carry 1.2 million of cubic meters of drinking water per day.

Khalfan Al Muhairi, Senior Vice President for Middle East, Africa and Export at Borouge, said, “Our innovative UAE-made solutions for safe, reliable and durable water pipes have been carefully developed and manufactured using the latest licensed technologies to be able to withstand long operating periods. Supporting our partners in addressing the challenges they face in various industries, we at Borouge have developed our Borcoat ™ ️ system and produced solutions that effectively protect long steel water pipes to extend their service life.

The project includes three water pumping stations and 14 steel water tanks divided equally between Riyadh and Jubail, with a capacity for each tank of 170,000 cubic meters and a total capacity of 2.3 million cubic meters.

Steel piping is usually used for the transportation of natural gas, crude oil, petrochemicals and water under conditions of high pressure and over long distances, but these pipelines are naturally prone to rust and corrosion and therefore must be coated inside and outdoors to protect them from damage to continue their performance for longer periods of time.

With Borcoat ™ polyethylene ️ as the best-in-class pipe coating solution, Borouge has a track record of over 15 years as a leader in the steel pipe sleeving market since 2005. Borcoat ™ polyethylene steel pipe sleeving solutions three layers of Borouge are characterized by the ability to improve the performance of steel pipes for longer and more reliable operating periods by protecting them from many climatic factors such as external rust, mechanical impact of shocks, chemicals in the soil and dissolution of ultraviolet rays during the overseas storage as well as from the extreme temperatures designed according to it.

Borouge’s innovative solutions were also used to produce steel water pipe casings that transport desalinated water from the Ras Al Khair desalination and power plant, located 70km northeast of Jubail in Riyadh.
