Doha, November 29 / WAM / The national soccer teams of Netherlands and Senegal have joined the qualifying convoy for the second round (round of 16) of the 2022 World Cup, with the former losing 2-0 to that of Qatar and the second against that of Ecuador Countermatch 2-1 today in the third and final round of group A The first round of the tournament.
The Dutch national team raised their score to 7 points at the top of the group, one point ahead of Senegal, and the Ecuadorian national team’s tally stood at 4 points, while the Qatar national team exited the qualification struggle before this shift.
The Dutch team won the match in their favor with two goals scored by Cody Jakobo and Frankie de Jong in the 26th and 49th minutes respectively.
In the other match, the Senegalese national team defeated their Ecuadorian counterparts with braces from Ismaila Sarr from penalties and Kalidou Coulibaly in the 44th and 70th minutes, against a goal from Moises Caicedo in the 68th minute.
With this, the Dutch and Senegalese teams joined France, Brazil and Portugal in the second round, as these three teams had booked their place in the second round through group stage second round matches.
This is the second time in 3 World Cup participations that the Senegal national team has advanced from the group stage to the knockout stage, as the only previous time was during their first participation in the tournament in 2002, in which they achieved a big upset and reached the quarterfinals.
Caicedo broke his colleague Enner Valencia’s dominance of the Ecuadorian national team’s goalscoring record, as his goal today was the first for Ecuador in 16 years without Valencia.
