DOUBAI, June 15, 2021 (WAM) – As part of the Medlab Middle East Transfusion Medicine Conference, which will take place on June 24, 2021, a series of sessions will address the challenges facing the blood donation industry. due to COVID-19. Among them will be the opening session “Insights on COVID-19 Implication on Blood Services”, moderated by the Chief and Medical Director of the Dubai Blood Donor Center, Dr. May Yassine Raouf.
According to the latest statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), around 118 million blood donations are made worldwide each year, but according to research, COVID-19 has had an impact on donations throughout. 2020.
The Lancet, the peer-reviewed general medical journal, reported that the pandemic had significant implications for blood transfusion due to reduced donations. However, this was largely offset by reductions in the demand for transfusions and supported by the implementation of contingency plans with prioritization policies in place in the event of a shortage.
In the United Arab Emirates, a series of measures were introduced at the height of the pandemic, including postponing non-essential surgeries to prioritize critical health issues.
Conference Director for Informa Markets, Rejoy Penacerrada, said: “This year’s blood transfusion conference will cover a range of topics dealing with the impact of COVID-19 on blood services around the world. We have recruited several world leaders on the subject, and their ideas will be invaluable to the industry as we enter a post-pandemic world. ”
Other highlights of the session included the impact of COVID-19 on transfusion medicine by esteemed Professor Erica Wood, President of the International Society of Blood Transfusion.
Innovation will also be a key talking point at the conference, with one of the key sessions “Frozen Blood Cell Technology for Emergency and Rare Blood Groups” taking center stage. This practice was recently introduced in the United Arab Emirates, allowing rare blood units and blood groups to be saved and used in emergencies and disasters.
The session is led by Prof. Masja de Haas, Department of Immunohematology Diagnostic Services at the Research Center for Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion, Leiden University Medical Center, Amsterdam.
Coinciding with Arab Health, Medlab Middle East will take place June 21-24, 2021 at the Dubai World Trade Center and is expected to attract a range of key lab and commerce professionals from across the region for the live and in-person event.
The event will feature keynote and scientific lectures, industry briefings, product demonstrations and networking opportunities, as well as a series of pre-hosted one-on-one meetings, with a focus on building lasting relationships.
