ABU DHABI, January 31, WAM/ Etihad Airways announced its cooperation with the Marriott International Group to plant 12,000 mangrove seedlings on Jubail Island. The initiative forms part of a broader campaign to launch the Etihad and Marriott Mangroves initiative, and aims to support sustainability efforts in the UAE.
Mangroves are spread over an area of more than 150 square kilometers of the coast of the UAE, and constitute the only evergreen forest in the Arabian Gulf region, as it provides a natural habitat for marine and terrestrial organisms.
Teams from Etihad Airways, in cooperation with the Marriott International Group, succeeded in planting the first group of mangroves on Jubail Island during the first phase of the project, which began on January 27, 2023 and will last for two months.
This cooperation is part of the Union Forest initiative for mangroves, which was launched by Etihad Airways with the aim of planting 182,000 mangrove trees during the first quarter of 2023, before expanding the work program to include planting forests within several international destinations that the company’s flights reach.
Kim Hardaker, Vice President Loyalty and Partnerships at Etihad Airways, said: “We are pleased to partner with the Marriott Group to plant 12,000 mangroves in Abu Dhabi this year. with other terrestrial forests, which is one of the reasons why Etihad Airways launched the Etihad Mangrove Forest last year.”
