DUBAI, 20th November 2020 / WAM / Dubai Road and Transport Authority has awarded a contract for the construction of cycle lanes, in Al Khawaneej and Mishref regions, with a length of seven kilometers, connected to existing routes in the two regions, which are 32 kilometers long, thus bringing the length of trails in the two regions to 39 kilometres.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of the Roads and Transport Authority, said the implementation of the project is part of a comprehensive plan developed by the Authority to provide special tracks for jogging and cover bicycles all areas of the Emirate of Dubai, with the aim of encouraging residents and visitors to engage in sports and leisure activities to improve the quality of life in the Emirate, and also fits within the framework of the authority’s will to strengthen the link between cycle paths in residential areas and connection with the attractions of the region.
He added that the first bicycle route starts from the Quranic Park on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, to its intersection with Al Khawaneej Street, and crosses the street through the common pedestrian and bicycle bridge located on Al Khawaneej Street, to to connect with the existing cycle path in Al Khawaneej area. Emphasizing that the second bicycle lane starts from Mushrif Park near Crocodile Park, and extends to its intersection with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and from there heads north along the street to its intersection with Al Khawaneej Street, and crosses the road via the pedestrian and bicycle bridge on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street to join the bicycle lane in Al Khawaneej area, bringing the total length of the two new lanes and former tracks at Al Khawaneej and Mishref to about 39km.
Al Tayer explained that the cycle path in Al Khawaneej and Mishref areas is part of a comprehensive plan for the development of cycle paths and aims to connect the various vital areas of the emirate. The plan aims to connect the coastal areas such as Jumeirah, Al Sufouh and Marina areas with external runways in Al Qudra, Seih Al Salam and Nad Al Sheba, passing through the areas of Al Barsha, Dubai Hills and Nad Al Sheba.
He added that the best international standards and specifications and technical guides have been taken into account in the design and implementation of bicycle lanes and speed limits, in line with the nature of the region and the classification of routes. To realize the strategy of the first and of the last miles travel.
It should be noted that the total length of the cycle paths built up to the first quarter of this year amounted to 542 km, and the authority intends to increase the length of the cycle paths to 819 km by the end of 2026, with the aim of connecting the most vital areas of the emirate with various public transport stations.
