Sharm El-Sheikh, 4 November / WAM / The United Nations Conference on Climate Change “COP27”, which kicks off Sunday in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh with the slogan “Together towards implementation … to achieve results equitable and ambitious “, constitutes a new test in the world’s ability to cooperate to address the effects of climate change, as participants hope that” COP27 “will achieve a more effective response to the challenge of climate change, the effects of which have been exacerbated. year of floods that destroyed land and caused casualties, warming Arctic ice melt and drying rivers, spread of disease-causing viruses and food security crises, rising sea levels, fires and increasing internal displacement of tens of millions of people in different parts of the world.
The Arab Republic of Egypt affirmed its call for the UN Climate Change Conference “COP27” to represent a turning point in addressing economic challenges and climate change locally and globally, ensuring the participation of all parties external and local stakeholders and who face the challenges of climate change is at the heart of the sustainable development process.

The “COP27” will be launched next Sunday in Sharm El-Sheikh and will continue until the 18th of this month at the Sharm El-Sheikh International Convention Center, one of the largest and most innovative convention centers in the Middle East and Africa, and contains a variety of flexible conference and exhibition rooms.

The city of Sharm El-Sheikh announced the completion of preparations to host the Climate Summit following its green transformation by adopting sustainable housing, transportation, energy, waste management and tourism operations, confirming the use of renewable energy during the “cop27 “while developing the systems needed to rationalize energy consumption at Sharm El-Sheikh airport, the International Conference Center and hotels and provided sustainable smart transportation via electric and gas buses.
At a press conference last month, Ambassador Wael Abul-Magd, special representative of the COP27 chairman, said: “We cannot underestimate the threat to humanity due to climate change; 4% of global economic output by 2050 could be lost due to climate change and 5 million die. “One person per year due to extreme temperatures that will only get worse as temperatures rise. The main problem will always be the financing and we cannot take a very aggressive path, we have to find creative ways to get to the financing “.
In turn, Ambassador Mohamed Nasr, chief negotiator and director general for climate, environment and sustainable development at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that current commitments are a limit, not a ceiling, adding: “If we are to provide an effective response to protect people from climate change. Climate change will not let up.” We should not, in our ambition, address it. “
In late 2015 and following the climate talks at the Paris Summit, international cooperation began to unify and strengthen efforts to address the challenges of climate change, but the Covid-19 pandemic has led to a decline in efforts towards the climate change, so much so that these concerns have returned to the top of the list of the most urgent risks and challenges facing the world after the success of measures to deal with a pandemic crown.
At the conclusion of COP26 in Glasgow, Britain last year, participants reached an agreement recognizing that the commitments made so far by countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming are not close enough to prevent the global warming exceeds global temperature by 1.5 degrees Pre-industrial revolution and the deal called for governments to improve these targets by the end of 2022 rather than every 5 years as previously requested, and the deal included a call for the first time to countries to reduce their dependence on coal and withdraw from fossil fuel subsidies, which will face major implementation difficulties following the Russian-Ukrainian events, which significantly impacted energy supply in the European Union.
According to the World Bank, the climate crisis is worsening and its relationship to poverty and inequality is now clearly visible.

A United Nations report indicated that the “Covid-19” pandemic did not stop climate change and, although it led to a decrease in emissions, this decrease was temporary and emissions returned to what they were before the pandemic. on a path that would cause a global temperature increase of more than 1.5 ° C, which can cause devastating effects.
– Change the route.
“We have to change course,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at the opening of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York last September, adding: “My goal is to make it clear that we need cooperation. and dialogue. Let that happen. “
In turn, Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the climate pioneer for the Egyptian presidency, explained to the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change “Cop27″ at the events of the New York Climate Week September 2022, that ” cop27 “will focus on the effective implementation of climate action, transforming commitments into action and translating the promises of summits and conferences. Previous climate solutions into workable solutions “, noting that developed countries have not yet fulfilled their commitments made at the Conference of the Parties in Copenhagen to finance climate action in developing countries worth $ 100 billion per year. year, although this funding, if realized, does not represent more than 3% of climate action funding.
He mentioned that there are other sources of climate action financing, including innovative financing instruments such as debt swaps for joint investments in climate projects, blended financing that mixes public and private financing, and the creation of commensurate carbon markets. to the economies of developing countries.
