Emirates growth in Germany: from 30 to 268 in twenty years

A lot has happened in aviation in the past 20 years. The golf airlines in particular experienced a rapid rise. One of the people who experienced this first hand is Emirates’ Germany boss Volker Greiner.

The twenties soon began – the new millennium was slowly growing up. A lot has happened in its first 20 years. Aviation has developed particularly rapidly: Technological progress made for more security, the number of passengers tripled, new aircraft came onto the market and many new competitors emerged.

Many of the novices had no one on the screen at the end of the 1990s. That was one of them Emirates. The airline, founded in 1985, has been flying to Frankfurt from its inception. But the big growth started much later.

Munich caught up

At the start “we flew daily from Frankfurt and daily from Munich. Today we offer ten daily scheduled flights from four German airports », remembers Germany boss Volker Greiner. “At the time, our fleet comprised almost 30 aircraft and our route network had 50 destinations. Today, Emirates operates the largest long-haul fleet worldwide with 268 wide-body aircraft and we fly to 158 destinations in over 80 countries. »

At the beginning of 2000 Frankfurt Airport was decently the most important in Germany, the balance has shifted. Munich Airport is becoming increasingly popular – with passengers and airlines. For example, Lufthansa is increasingly marketing the airport as a flagship hub and relocating the majority of its Airbus A380s there. Emirates also appreciates the airport, where it celebrated its 20th anniversary in November.

The end of the A380 brings changes

“Munich Airport offers airlines and passengers an optimal infrastructure,” says Greiner. Emirates currently offers three flights from Munich, two of them with the Airbus A380. The Golf Airline was the first airline to use the super jumbo to Munich. Greiner acknowledges that Lufthansa has an important part in the rise of the Bavarian airport.

The Airbus A380 made a significant contribution to Emirates’ success story – and vice versa. The airline is the most important customer of the Superjumbo and has ordered a total of 123 copies. That couldn’t save the plane. Airbus has decided to end the program this year.

Direct flights more in demand

“The A380 will remain an important pillar of our fleet well into the 2030s,” says Greiner. “For the time after that, we are optimally positioned with our 777 fleet and orders for the A350 and 777x.” When Airbus presented the Superjumbo, it was assumed that the Emirates model would be the future: transporting passengers with huge airplanes via turnstiles – and for a long time that also contributed to the success of golf airlines.

But meanwhile, passengers are increasingly appreciating non-stop flights – not least because of the discussion about the climate impact of flying. And the golf airlines also feel this. The head of the Emirates Germany is confident that his airline can survive in this difficult environment.

First screens for everyone

Differentiate yourself about the product. “WWe were able to set industry standards time and time again, »says Emirates’ head of Germany Greiner. For example, they were the first airline in the world to fly with individual screens in every class on all aircraft, offered the first private suites and virtual windows in commercial aviation, or were the first Airline that introduced the use of mobile phones on board.
